POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Position Title: Department Head & Professor of Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Sciences
The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS) in the College of Agriculture at Utah State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Department Head. This is a full time, tenure track, administrative position.
The ADVS Department is one of the largest departments on campus having 34 faculty, 15 professionals and 57 classified employees. Faculty members have assignments in teaching, research, and (or) Extension. Undergraduate students, 263 in 2006, graduate with a BS degree in Animal, Dairy, and Bioveterinary Sciences in one of four emphases areas including Animal and Dairy Sciences, Bioveterinary Science, Biotechnology, and Equine Science. Graduate students, 28 in 2006 earn MS or PhD degrees in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Bioveterinary Science, or Toxicology.
The department garnered over $6 million in external funding in 2006 in support of its research programs in animal nutrition, breeding and genetics, molecular biology, reproductive biology, animal and dairy management, animal health, and toxicology. The department provides Extension services for a large number of producers, commodity groups, and other clientele both on and off campus with over 5000 stakeholder contacts in 2006. Areas of emphasis in Extension include, but are not limited to beef, dairy, equine, poultry, veterinary medicine, and toxicology.
The department manages several facilities that support its missions in teaching, research and Extension, including farms throughout the state, the Center for Antiviral Research, the university's Laboratory Animal Research Center, and the state's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant for this position will be responsible for the leadership of all the department's teaching, research, and Extension programs. The department head must have a keen understanding of scholarship and the ability to articulate and promote scholarly excellence in all three areas. They should foster a positive, collegial climate and participatory decision-making process within the department that promotes excellence in the department's programs.
The department head will also undertake administrative responsibility for the department's organizational performance. He or she is responsible for fiscal planning and oversight of the department's budgets and resources, and for management of process and procedures relating to human resources, including recruitment, career development, performance evaluations, and retention of faculty and staff.
The department head is further responsible for advocacy for the department within and outside the university. He or she is expected to establish effective liaisons with other departments, college and university administration, government agencies, industry and alumni. The ultimate goals are to increase public and professional recognition for the department, and to garner resources (competitive, non-competitive and gifted) that strengthen and broaden the department's mission.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A PhD, DVM, or equivalent terminal degree in an academic discipline relevant to the department
- A strong record of professional and scholarly achievement eligible for the rank of tenured full professor in the department
Preferred Qualifications:
- Capacity to provide visionary leadership to support and promote excellence in teaching, research, and Extension
- Appreciation for diverse research and extension programs and the synergy of basic research, applied research, and Extension efforts
- Understanding and appreciation for undergraduate and graduate teaching
- Proficiency and aptitude for program administration and evaluation, curriculum improvement, fiscal management and development, and collaboration with stakeholders
- Organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to create and enhance relationships with other programs and units at the university
- Ability to articulate and advocate the vision and goals of the department to a broad range of audiences
- Commitment to the principles of diversity and community and interest in increasing diversity in the department
