Smithfield Livestock Auction
Spring & Summer Internship (Mid-April thru mid-September)
Job Descriptions:
Auction Day (Thursdays):
- Become familiar with all phases of the livestock auction
- Check in cattle prior to auction Wednesday afternoon & Thursday A.M.
- Sort cattle prior to selling, and in the ring,
- Pen cattle, load buyers trucks after auction.
Intensive Grazing:
- Responsible for intensive grazing on irrigated pasture and mountain summer pastures
- Running both pairs and yearlings
- Determine stocking rates for both, through out grazing season
Herd Health:
- Assist management to determine vaccination protocol
- Supplement monitoring
- Branding, vaccinating, castration of calves
Fence repair:
- As needed: Barded wire, electric, welded pipe and sucker rod.
Horsemanship skills:
- Gather & sort cattle on summer allotments
- Roping at branding, doctoring cattle on range
Job Requirements:
- CDL (Commercial Driver's License): Helpful but not necessary to drive semi, hauling cattle to and from summer allotments.
- Basic knowledge of farm and ranch equipment: tractors, loaders, trucks & trailers.
- Possible exposure to Ag. Tourism with chuck wagon dinner show
- Possible horse shoeing using tabletop hydro-chute
- Must be honest, dependable, hardworking
- Must have clean driving record
- Applicant may be screened for drug use
- Wage negotiable based on experience
